Description
Module Two: The Drivers and Barriers of Motivation to Exercise
In this five-week module, we investigate biological drives, arousal and the role of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Students will explore biological instincts, environmental triggers and fixed-action patterns before examining Hull’s Drive Reduction Theory and the idea that behaviour can be motivated by the body’s attempt to restore balance.
We then apply motivation theory to exercise. Using Self-Determination Theory, students will explore how our needs for competence, relatedness and autonomy can influence whether we begin and continue physical activity. Along the way, we examine research into persistence and dropout, taking into account real-world barriers that can make exercise difficult even when someone is motivated.
Suitable for students aged 14+.
